Occupy Pittsburgh – Greenfield Bridge Takeover

On November 17, 2011, members of Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 joined the movement in trying to get people to acknowledge that our bridges are in desperate need of repair.  Hundreds joined to “takeover” the Greenfield Bridge in a peaceful demonstration.  The theme of the day followed the “Good Jobs Now” cry that could be heard across the country in support of passing the American Jobs Act.  Click here to see pictures of the Takeover.

Labor Day Parade 2011

Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 wishes to thank Century Steel Erectors for donating a truck, trailer, and driver to help make our “float” for the Labor Day Parade a success.  Even though the weather was rainy and cold, the members of Local 3, as well as our brother and sister local unions, helped brighten the day by showing union pride and solidarity.  Check out our Labor Day Parade 2011 pictures.

Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 - 4^th Annual Contractors & Construction Professionals’ Open House and 18^th Annual Outstanding Apprentice Competition

On Thursday, April 21^st, 2011, Iron Workers Local Union No. 3’s Apprenticeship Facility opened its doors to contractors, architects, state representatives, political figureheads, OSHA officials, vendors, and many more for its 4^th Annual Contractors & Construction Professionals’ Open House and 18^th Annual Outstanding Apprentice Competition. 

The event began with interactive classroom and training demonstrations throughout the facility given by the apprentices and apprentice instructors.  The goal was to build awareness of the training that Local #3 provides to its apprentices as well as the upgrading courses provided to its journeymen. 

The third year apprentices, who had been completing various parts of the Apprentice Competition throughout the week, wrapped up the last part of the competition by competing in the famed column climb.  After the scores were tallied, the outstanding apprentices that would move on to the regional competition in Toledo were Tom Kibbe with an overall score of 81.29 and Adam Davis with an overall score of 80.23.

At the General Executive Council Meeting this morning, I submitted my resignation as General President of the International Association effective as of January 31, 2011.  At the same meeting, the General Executive Council unanimously elected General Secretary Walter Wise as General President of the International Association effective as of February 1, 2011.

For the third consecutive season, Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 has become a Corporate Sponsor of the Pittsburgh Penguins.  When you attend a game at the new CONSOL Energy Center, be sure to look for:  our ad in the IceTime Program; our LED banners with our logo; our feature – “Building of a Champion Brought to You by Iron Workers Local Union No. 3” that plays on the JumboTron during the game; and our banner ad on all the TVs throughout the arena.  For those not in attendance but listening to the action on Pens Radio, be sure to listen for our radio commercials during the broadcast.  After helping to construct their new home, we are extremely proud to partner with such an excellent organization such as the Pittsburgh Penguins, and hope to be a part of another winning season both on and off the ice.
