About Iron Workers Local Union No. 3
For more than a century, members of Iron Workers Local Union No. 3 in western Pennsylvania have been at the heart of building structures. Virtually every major high-rise building in downtown Pittsburgh and the surrounding area carries the stamp of an ironworker. Ironworkers are also essential in other projects, such as erecting bridges, blast furnaces, ornamental ironwork and dams. Once the structure is built, you may not see our handiwork, but without it, the structure wouldn’t exist.
Although we’re known as “Cowboys in the Sky,” some of us never leave the ground. Imagine – it’s an ironworker who’s called to install sophisticated, expensive Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) devices in area hospitals and clinics. Without us, Pittsburgh may not have become the medical center of our region.
We represent more than 1,300 active ironworkers in western Pennsylvania and Erie, and we’re looking for more. With a building boom expected in our region over the next few years – a slots casino, bridge maintenance and construction, and residential towers – we have openings for apprentices who get paid well while they train.
